Dreamy Boudoir Photoshoot with Stunning Vintage Lingerie in Dallas, TX
What is a Dreamy Boudoir Photoshoot?
A dreamy boudoir photoshoot leans into soft lighting, feminine styling, and a hazy, romantic atmosphere instead of sharp, contrasted, and editorial styling. That was exactly the goal when I photographed Ariel at my personal studio, Royal Lune Studio, for three different vintage inspired looks.
Ariel works as a professional in the beauty industry, which came in handy since she did her own hair and makeup for the entire session, not something every client can pull off without help. Every piece of wardrobe across all three looks came from my own client closet: a vintage ivory nightgown and robe for look one, a feminine pink lingerie set for look two, and a blush lace teddy with a floral headdress for look three. If whimsical boudoir portraiture Dallas photography is what you are after, this dreamy boudoir photoshoot is perfect for you!
A Dreamy Indoor Floral Studio Photoshoot: A Vintage Armoire and Dreamy Florals
This dreamy boudoir photoshoot is the kind of whimsical boudoir portraiture Dallas clients are looking for. With a combination of hazy fog, romantic floral design, and a photography studio with a vintage aesthetic, this session is the definition of ethereal.
I built the set with trailing ivy and soft toned florals throughout, then let the palette shift slightly with each look. Look one sits against a gilt mirror wrapped in ivy and a vintage art decor wardrobe. Look two happens at a vintage vanity dressed with candlelight and pastel blooms, plus one moodier arrangement of deep purple flowers and red apples set almost like a crown above Ariel’s head. Look three moves to my wrought iron gate backdrop, dressed this time with hanging grape clusters, closer to a vineyard goddess feel than a typical indoor floral studio photoshoot.
Using a Fog Machine to Create a Dreamy Haze
A fog machine is one of the biggest reasons this session reads as soft and dreamlike instead of overly sharp. I make sure to use a “low lying” fog juice to create the perfect dreamy atmosphere.
Fog softens every hard edge in a frame. It catches the light instead of letting it hit skin and fabric directly, which is exactly why every image from this dreamy boudoir photoshoot has that hazy, ethereal quality. Due to my studio being a smaller space, I let the fog machine run in shorter bursts throughout the session as needed.
New Boudoir Studio Set Design: Vintage “Art Deco” Armoire
A tall, vintage wooden armoire is the newest piece in my studio, and this dreamy boudoir photoshoot was one of its first real appearances on set. You can see it clearly in look one, doors open, with the pink lace for look two already hanging inside next to a sheer green piece, candlelight flickering nearby, and a grape draped urn just out of frame.
Soft, Feminine Vintage Boudoir Outfits
Look One: An Ivory Slip Dress, Sheer Robe, and Vintage Style Gloves
Look one paired an ivory satin slip dress with a sheer vintage robe, pearl beaded gloves, and a handful of dark pink florals for a soft, old Hollywood take on this dreamy boudoir photoshoot.
The slip itself is ivory satin with a lace bodice insert built into a deep V neckline, layered under a sheer vintage nylon robe with romantic, flowing sleeves. Ariel held a handful of dark pink florals in several poses for natural and romantic posing.
The gloves might be my favorite detail in this entire dreamy boudoir photoshoot! Thin pearl beading runs along every seam, the kind of vintage detail modern gloves almost never bother with anymore. Pair that with a simple pearl necklace and you get a vintage boudoir photography DFW session my clients tend to be drawn to.
Old Hollywood Glamour in a Bias Cut Slip Dress
The bias cut of Ariel’s slip dress pulls directly from 1930s Hollywood glamour, the same silhouette actresses like Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich made iconic in their own era of boudoir and pinup photography.
That fabric skims the body instead of clinging to it, and it moves in a way modern slip dresses rarely replicate since most are cut straight rather than on the bias. Pairing it with a sheer robe and long gloves pushes the look even further into that era, closer to a starlet getting ready for an evening out than a modern lingerie set. It is one of my favorite silhouettes to shoot for exactly this reason.
Look Two: A Pink Lingerie Set Paired with Bows and Pearl Accessories for a Hyper Feminine Look
Look two shifted into a pink lingerie set layered under a vintage sheer pink robe paired with bows, pearls, and a ribbon tied through Ariel’s hair for the most overtly feminine moment in this dreamy boudoir photoshoot.
The set itself is blush pink with a prominent satin bow on the bra and a ruffled white bottom trimmed in tulle, paired with a vintage sheer pink robe for added texture and movement. A pale pink ribbon threaded through Ariel’s hair and pearl strands looped loosely across her waist pushed the whole look further into that hyper feminine direction we wanted to lean into.
I love handing my clients a small vintage hand mirror during a boudoir session like this one. It adds a painterly, feminine touch to the storytelling that a straight portrait pose just cannot match on its own. The close up of Ariel checking her lipstick in it turned out to be one of our favorite shots from the session, after all, I am a sucker for detail shots.
Look Three: A Blush Lace Teddy with a Floral Crown and Veil
Look three closed out this dreamy boudoir photoshoot with a blush lace teddy with whimsical tulle detialing and a floral crown with a trailing veil built for a Juliet inspired, fairytale finish.
Like most of my vintage client closet, this teddy lingerie piece was thrifted. With the blush pink lace and tulle hem built into the design, a detail common in 70s and 80s lingerie construction, I knew this piece would be perfect for this romantic boudoir session. That tulle catches movement and light in a way that keeps the whole look feeling soft and unstructured. The floral crown mixes blush and white blooms with greenery, and the veil trails almost to the floor in a few frames, the Juliet style, veil like detail I had in mind when I first planned this look. Natural florals, sheer movement, and a trailing veil are what give this look its ethereal quality.
Pre Raphaelite Inspired Floral Crown and Veil Styling
The floral crown and trailing veil in look three drew directly from Pre Raphaelite painting, a movement built on long hair, natural florals, and wistful expressions, the same visual language I lean on throughout my work.
Painters within the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood built entire careers around exactly this kind of styling: women draped in soft fabric, crowned in florals, caught somewhere between beauty and longing. I shot look three against my wrought iron gate backdrop, dressed this time with hanging grape clusters instead of the roses and ivy from look one, which pushed the scene closer to a vineyard goddess than a straightforward floral shoot. If you want to see this same painterly influence at work in a different session, my Pre Raphaelite Boudoir Photography post goes even deeper into how I translate this era into boudoir photography.
What should you wear for an Ethereal Vintage Boudoir Photoshoot?
Wardrobe for an ethereal vintage boudoir photoshoot works best in soft, light catching fabrics like nylon, silk, and lace, styled in ivory, blush, and gem tones. While the majority of my client closet is filled with thrifted vintage finds, I do have lingerie brand recommendations to easily find the perfect outfit for an ethereal boudoir session.
Choosing the Best Fabrics and Colors for an Ethereal Look
Vintage nylon is the fabric I reach for most when building an ethereal vintage boudoir photoshoot, since it gives lingerie a soft, almost glowing quality that newer fabrics rarely match. Anyone who has experience with vintage nylon knows how it’s finery creates an airy quality that is unmatched with most modern designs.
Both robes in this session are vintage nylon, and that is not an accident. Vintage nylon and silk blends give nightgowns and robes a quality that seems to float on camera, a texture modern polyester blends almost never replicate, even at a similar price point. I will choose a good vintage nylon robe over almost anything else.
Silk and chiffon pieces are equally as dreamy as both are so weightless they seem to float. Good quality satin is another beautiful option. Ariel’s first look included a vintage satin slip, which has a way of becoming almost liquid under studio light. Lace adds the opposite texture, structured yet delicate at the same time, which is exactly why it shows up in both look two and look three.
For color, I leaned on muted neutrals and blush tones rather than anything too bold for a softer, ethereal look. Since both ivory and blush tones are close to Ariel’s hair and skin tone, the styling remained soft and romantic, rather than contrasted and bold. I go into composition, color theory, and light and shadow in much more depth in my painterly boudoir style guide, if you want the fuller breakdown.
Favorite Vintage Lingerie and Sleepwear Brands
As I have previously mentioned, I find the majority of my vintage pieces from thrift stores such as Goodwill, Thrift Giant, and Thrift City. That being said, thrifting can be time consuming and unreliable when looking for a specific piece. Resale sites such as eBay, Etsy, Depop, and Poshmark are all great resources for finding beautiful vintage lingerie and nightgowns. Olga, Vanity Fair, Miss Elaine, Shadowline, Val Mode, and Lorraine are some of the vintage lingerie brands I search for most when browsing online.
- Olga: known for their secret hug line, with flowing skirts, gathered bodices, and a stretchy, ultra soft fabric. For my curvy clients, I often recommend Olga pieces as their gowns are extremely stretchy and can fit a large variety of sizes, something more challenging to find in vintage brands
- Vanity Fair: soft nylon slips with flattering, classic cuts
- Miss Elaine: shimmer nylon and delicate lace in dreamy pastel tones
- Shadowline and Val Mode: romantic, almost bridal feeling silhouettes with beautiful movement
- Lorraine: airy, ruffled nightgowns that are effortlessly feminine
One search habit that changes results: look specifically for 100 percent nylon or silk, and lower quality satin (high quality satin oftentimes is a garment detail rather than the only fabric present). While satin can be a beautiful option (this session is an example of that), it has very little movement or forgiveness on curves. The satin slip dress Ariel wore during her session included a nylon blend and a stretchy lace neckline, allowing for more movement and flattering shapes.
Favorite Lingerie Brands with a Romantic Aesthetic
If thrifting is not your thing or if you are looking for a specific style or size, several modern lingerie brands capture the same romantic mood I created for this dreamy boudoir photoshoot. Some of my favorite lingerie brands include:
- For Love & Lemons: delicate floral lace that pairs naturally into a painterly session like this one, sized XXS through XL, with select styles extending to 1X
- AdoreMe: classic silhouettes, bodysuits, slips, and corsets in a similar soft color range, at a more accessible price point, size inclusive from XS through 4X
- Empress Mimi: soft satin and lace pieces with a romantic, feminine feel, size inclusive from XS through XXL
- Thistle and Spire: vintage inspired silhouettes built with delicate lattice and embroidery detail, size inclusive up to 3X
If you want to build a full look beyond lingerie, Lacemade is worth exploring. The brand carries corsets, gowns, and accessories with the same romantic, storybook quality I built into this session, and it offers inclusive sizing, too.
Where to Shop for Lingerie Locally in DFW
Wildflower Intimates in Fort Worth and Bella Bra Shop in Dallas are both worth a visit if you would rather try pieces on in person before your session.
Wildflower Intimates is women owned, size inclusive up to 5X, and offers free professional bra sizing, which is useful if you are not sure what size to even start with. Bella Bra Shop is the closer option if Fort Worth is too far a drive, with the same range of sizes and in person fittings. Both shops include brands with a dreamy vibe such as Thistle and Spire, Kilo Brava, Carol Coelho, Blue Bella, Playful Promises, Dita Von Tesse, and more!
Why Book a Boudoir Studio with a Client Closet in DFW?
Every wardrobe piece Ariel wore across all three looks, from the ivory slip and both sheer robes down to the pearl beaded gloves, came from my own client closet. You do not need to own a single piece of vintage lingerie to book a session like this one. That is the entire point of a boudoir studio with client closet DFW: you pull whatever you want directly from the closet, no shopping trip required unless you have something specific in mind. I keep everything organized by era and color, which is exactly how three completely different vintage aesthetics came together for one client in a single session.
A boudoir studio with client closet DFW means you can show up with nothing and still leave with three fully styled looks. That is exactly how this dreamy boudoir photoshoot came together for Ariel.
Fine Art Boudoir Photography Dallas: Why Book with Royal Lune Photo
At Royal Lune Photo, I create every dreamy boudoir photoshoot inside my personal studio, Royal Lune Studio, built specifically to offer fine art boudoir photography Dallas that clients cannot easily find anywhere else in the area. I produce every photoshoot at Royal Lune Photo, and I also designed the majority of the set pieces within my studio space myself. That overlap is what creates a cohesive style between my photography and my studio setting.
My studio is an intimate space (approximately four hundred square foot space) in Sanger, Texas, just north of Denton, filled with antique furniture, floral design, and a rotating client closet stocked with pieces spanning several decades. I draw heavily from art history, Pre Raphaelite paintings especially, in almost everything I build here, which is exactly why a session like Ariel’s fits so naturally into the space.
If you want to see the studio before you book, my studio tour walks through the whole space, and my portfolio has full galleries from sessions like this one and plenty of others.
Creating a Dreamy Boudoir Style: Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions I get asked most about creating soft, vintage inspired boudoir sessions, both about this specific shoot and about the style in general.
What do I wear for a Vintage Boudoir Photoshoot?
Nylon, silk, and lace in muted, warm colors or gem tones photograph best for a vintage boudoir photoshoot. I cover the full brand list, both thrifted and modern, earlier in this post.
Can I do my own Hair and Makeup for my Boudoir Session?
Most of my packages include professional hair and makeup which I highly, especially if you want the soft, ethereal look featured in this dreamy boudoir photoshoot.
Ariel did her own hair and makeup for this session, but she works as a professional in the fashion industry, so that is not a typical starting point for most clients walking through my door. For an ethereal, soft focus look like this one, professional hair and makeup makes a noticeable difference. If you are booking a luxury photography experience, spending money on the styling is crucial to achieve your desired look.
If you want to book hair and makeup for your own session, the majority of my collections include professional styling services. All beauty appointments are conveniently done at my studio, so all you have to do is show up, be pampered, and then having your photoshoot with me.
How long does a Boudoir Session take?
A three look boudoir session like this one usually runs close to two hours once you factor in wardrobe changes, touch ups, and reset time between looks.
That estimate covers styling and set adjustments between each look, not hair and makeup, since Ariel did her own for this session. If you book professional hair and makeup as part of your package, plan on extra time up front before we even start shooting. My boudoir prep guide covers the full day timeline if you want to plan further ahead.
What Is Vintage Boudoir Photography?
Vintage boudoir photography oftentimes includes vintage secondhand lingerie, period accurate styling, and soft, warm lighting to recreate the feeling of an old film still rather than a modern editorial shoot.
This dreamy boudoir photoshoot leans into that definition through fabric choice more than anything else: nylon robes, a satin slip, pearl beaded gloves, nothing that reads as current or trend driven. If vintage boudoir photography DFW searches are what brought you here, my earlier vintage boudoir session is a good next stop, since it leans into the same era from a slightly different angle.
What is Soft Light Intimate Portraiture?
Soft light intimate portraiture relies on diffused, warm lighting rather than harsh studio strobes, and that softness is what creates a gentler, more romantic feeling in boudoir and portrait photography. Fog, candlelight, and video lights do most of that work in my studio. Every look in this dreamy boudoir photoshoot was shot almost entirely under that same warm, diffused light, which is exactly what keeps skin tones soft and shadows soft and romantic. Additionally, I oftentimes will use a black mist filter which creates a soft focus effect in camera.
Is Boudoir Photography right for me?
Boudoir photography works for far more people than most “marketing suggests”, and it has very little to do with age, size, relationship status, or prior modeling experience.
I go into this question in a lot more depth in my post Is Boudoir Photography Right for Me?, but the short version is simple: curiosity is usually reason enough to book a consultation and see how you feel.
Ready to Book your own Dreamy Boudoir Photoshoot?
If Ariel’s dreamy boudoir photoshoot spoke to you, whether it was the vintage wardrobe, the floral crown, or the whole hazy mood, I would love to help you plan something similar.
Every session I build starts with communicating about what you want to feel in your images, not just what you want to wear. For Ariel, that meant leaning fully into an old Hollywood, vintage inspired mood across three completely different looks, and from there I pulled wardrobe, planned the florals, and built the lighting around that mood board.
