Zodiac Styled Portraits

As the new year approached, I knew I wanted to commit to a year long creative project. Not only do creative photoshoots help me with burn out, I also love being challenged. I came up with a zodiac creative project and I am so excited to create concepts for each zodiac sign. Capricorn season begins going into the new year, so it was obvious to begin with the sea goat sign. Although not a Capricorn herself, Whitley represented the Earth sign perfectly. I am so excited to share the first of my zodiac series with this Capricorn photoshoot.

Capricorn Photography Concept

Creating the concept for Capricorn was not easy. Represented by the sea goat, Capricorn has both goat horns and a fish tail. The obvious answer was a mermaid tail and horn headpiece. After doing some research, I decided on a silver mermaid tail. As an Earth sign in winter, Capricorn colors include grey, amber, and deep greens. I knew a silver tail and natural goat horns would capture the Capricorn color palette. In addition to the grey tail and horns, I had Whitley wear a silver wig to bring the look together.

Capturing the Traits of Capricorn

Anyone who loves astrology knows Capricorn as being dedicated, practical, and serious. Ruled by Saturn, Earth signs are described as grounded and oftentimes stubborn. I really wanted to capture the serious nature of Capricorn and I believe Whitley did an amazing job at being stoic, but with passionate expressions and poses. Capricorn is represented by the sea goat and yet is an Earth sign. This is confusing for many people, but taking a look at the history of this zodiac sign clears things up. According to Greek myth, Capricornus received it’s name from the god Pan, a satyr. Legend says Pan jumped into the Nile to escape a giant, becoming a goat who can swim. Satyrs and fauns are known as Earth centric creatures, being depicted in nature. This story explains why Capricorn is an Earth sign and not a water sign although being represented by a sea creature.
