Alternative Engagement Photographer Dallas at Royal Lune Studio
One of my favorite aesthetics to photograph has to be the combination of moody meets romantic, so this gothic engagement session was right up my ally! Daniela and Alberto came to my personal studio, Royal Lune Studio, located in Sanger, Texas, seeking a romantic, gothic aesthetic for their engagement photos. Dallas-area Goth/Alt HMUA Morbid Beauty applied makeup on both clients, and LaDonna styled hair on set. Red and black roses and a fog machine completed the staging. The breakdown below covers wardrobe changes, prop styling, and vendor credits.
Inspiration for this Gothic Couples Photography Session
Daniela and Alberto wanted their engagement portraits to match their upcoming gothic wedding. Instead of helping them creating a concept from scratch, the session mirrored their established ceremony aesthetic using black clothing and a dark palette. Inside the studio, fog added depth and a dreamy haze to the all black wardrobe. Red and black roses provided a color accent against the clothing, and the couple brought their rings for close-up detail shots. These set and wardrobe choices carried through two setups, from formal portraits to a second look featuring Alberto’s horned headpiece.
The reference point for this shoot was the couple’s own upcoming gothic wedding. Daniela and Alberto had already settled on their color story and overall tone for the ceremony, so the engagement session followed that same direction: black clothing, a dark palette, and gothic bride and groom photos that preview what their wedding day portraits will look like. Building the concept around their real event kept the shoot grounded in choices they had already made.
Styling a Dark Fantasy Engagement Photos: Wardrobe and Props
Working with Formal Black Wardrobe and Horned Headpieces
Daniela and Alberto brought two looks to the session, both featuring gothic styled looks. The first look consisted of formal, structured pieces. Studio fog provided depth to the dark wardrobe without requiring a second light source for visual separation. The second setup shifted toward dark fantasy. Alberto wore a horned headpiece with the same black clothing, transitioning the aesthetic toward their full gothic wedding theme.

Integrating Floral Props and Detail Shots
Although red roses served as the primary props used throughout their session, we included a lit candle for a few shots and added fabrics throughout the sets. The red roses provided a color accent against the dark wardrobe, and the black roses reinforced the color palette. These flowers appeared in both setups to maintain visual consistency. The couple brought their wedding rings for detail shots. The rings were photographed directly among the roses, pairing their personal items with the set styling. These close-up images sit alongside the wider portraits in the final gallery.
Creating the Perfect Set at Royal Lune Studio in DFW: Moody Engagement Session Dallas, TX
Royal Lune Studio is a private space in DFW built for sessions that desire creative control not present in an outdoor session, while still having lush, dreamy sets inspired by the outdoors. Clients from Denton and across the wider Dallas Fort Worth area book the studio to create in a space with professional floral designs, a 12 foot moss wall installation, and vintage details throughout. LaDonna set up directly in the studio to style Daniela and Alberto’s hair before shooting began, so both clients moved from styling straight into the shot without leaving the building.
The lighting for this session came from Godox ML80Bi and Godox RS60Bi continuous fixtures, shot on a Nikon Z 6ii with a black mist lens filter to soften the overall contrast. A fog machine filled the room with fog juice throughout both looks, adding depth to the gothic bride and groom photos.
Working with an alternative engagement photographer Dallas in a private, enclosed studio gives this kind of dark romantic engagement photography an advantage a public or outdoor location can’t match. Fog stays contained instead of dispersing in open air, the black wardrobe reads consistently under one lighting setup, and the horned headpiece look from the second half of the session worked without any outside foot traffic or lighting changes.
Gothic Couples Photography Dallas Frequently Asked Questions
How should clients prepare for an alternative engagement session?
Preparation starts with sharing a concept or mood board in advance, so wardrobe, props, and lighting get planned around it before the session date. Most clients get hair and makeup done in the studio by LaDonna, who works with each client directly on site. Two looks give a session more range: one formal, one built around a theme or accent piece. The session prep guide covers what to bring and how the day is structured so you know what to expect.
Do clients need to come hair and makeup ready before arriving at the studio?
No, the studio accommodates local stylists for on site hair and makeup! LaDonna styled hair directly in the studio for this session, which keeps the look intact right up to the first shot. On site styling works well for couples planning a specific aesthetic ahead of a wedding. Feel prepared for your next session by exploring my session guide!
Can clients bring personal props for detail shots?
Yes, I encourage it! Wedding rings or sentimental items are a great way to add a person touch to your engagement session. Daniela and Alberto brought their rings to the session for some “save the date” shots. I then placed them among the red and black roses so that the details shots matched the rest of their session. Personal props work well alongside the studio’s existing set pieces, so feel free to bring them to your own session.
