“And he took her in his arms and kissed her under the sunlit sky,
and he cared not that they stood high upon the walls in the sight of many…”
– Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Magical Texas Renaissance Festival Wedding
Some weddings begin the moment a couple says yes. Alegra and Steven’s began long before that, somewhere between a daydream and a fairytale, and it carried us all the way to a Texas Renaissance Festival wedding I will be thinking about for years to come. This was a day built on stained glass light, a fantasy gown that moved like water, and an entire festival cheering two people on as they stepped into their happily ever after.
Fantasy Engagement & Bridal Photos: Three Sessions in the Making
There are weddings you photograph, and then there are weddings you’ve been dreaming about since the very first session. Alegra and Steven’s Texas Renaissance Festival wedding was the second kind.
I met Alegra and Steven last year for their engagement session, two creatives with a shared love of fantasy who wanted something cinematic and painterly long before they ever set foot at the festival. Then came Alegra’s bridal session, where her Firefly Path fantasy bridal gown made its first appearance. So when their actual wedding day finally arrived at the Texas Renaissance Festival, it felt less like a new project and more like the final chapter of a story we’d already started telling together.
As a Dallas Fort Worth based photographer, traveling down to Todd Mission for a true destination wedding was its own kind of adventure. But the moment I stepped onto the festival grounds, I understood exactly why Alegra and Steven chose this place to say “I do.”
Dreamy Firefly Path Bridal Gown
If you followed Alegra’s bridal session, you already know her gown. Designed by Firefly Path, a designer known for fantasy couture and fairytale silhouettes, the gown featured a corseted bodice and flowing sleeves that moved like water with every step she took.
Seeing this Firefly Path bridal gown again on her actual wedding day, this time in the natural daylight of the festival grounds rather than the studio, gave it an entirely new life. The train caught the breeze as she walked. The sleeves shifted and settled differently outdoors than they had in our studio session. It was the same fairytale gown, but it told a slightly different story under open sky as her chosen Texas Renaissance Festival wedding photographer.
Why Couples Choose a Texas Renaissance Festival Wedding
The Texas Renaissance Festival is one of the most unique wedding destinations in the country. Spread across fifty five acres designed to feel like a recreated sixteenth century English village, the festival offers couples a fully immersive setting that most traditional venues simply cannot match. Couples can choose from several themed ceremony venues, including the Cathedral Chapel, the Rose Garden, the English Garden, and The Basilica, along with on site reception options like the Italian Village and the Lady Rose Pavilion.
For couples who love fantasy, history, or simply want a wedding day that feels like its own story rather than a template, TRF offers something most venues can’t: an entire world built around the kind of romance you’d normally only find in a film or a novel. It’s the perfect setting for fantasy and Renaissance inspired weddings, and for couples like Alegra and Steven, it was the only setting that made sense. As a fantasy wedding photographer, The Texas Renaissance Festival was an absolute dream wedding location.
The Ceremony at The Basilica Wedding Chapel
Alegra and Steven were married at The Basilica Wedding Chapel, one of the festival’s most striking ceremony venues. Modeled after a Roman temple, The Basilica is framed by ornate columns, soaring ceilings, and stained glass windows that scatter color across the floor as the light shifts throughout the day. It’s a space built for romance, and it gave their ceremony a grandeur that felt both ancient and timeless.
Their ceremony began with a horse drawn carriage ride to The Basilica, followed by a royal guard procession and a sword arch for them to walk beneath as newlyweds. Musical fanfare carried through the air the entire time, the kind of detail that makes a TRF wedding feel less like a ceremony and more like the opening scene of a story.
Watching Steven’s face as Alegra walked toward him under that stained glass light is one of those moments I’ll carry with me for a long time. There’s a particular kind of light inside The Basilica Wedding Chapel, soft and colored and a little otherworldly, and it gave every frame of their ceremony a painterly quality that felt like it belonged in a gallery rather than a wedding album.
Bride & Groom Portraits Around the Renaissance Festival Grounds
We spent most of our portrait time in the Magical Garden, an area of the festival grounds that felt like it was built specifically for fantasy inspired love stories. The greenery, texture, and natural framing throughout the Magical Garden gave us backdrop after backdrop without needing to search for the right spot. It paired perfectly with Alegra’s fantasy bridal gown and the overall fairytale feel of their day.
What I love most about photographing portraits at TRF is how little staging is required. The festival has already done the work of building a world, so my job becomes finding the light and guiding Alegra and Steven into moments that felt like them rather than performed. We moved through the grounds slowly, letting their connection lead the way, the same approach I use in every session with them since their very first shoot together.
Celebrating at The Italian Village Reception
Their reception took place at the Italian Village, one of TRF’s on site reception venues. Minstrels played live throughout the evening, filling the space with the kind of music that made the entire celebration feel transported in time. As Alegra and Steven made their way from the ceremony toward the reception, guests throughout the festival cheered them on, a moment captured in both the Instagram Reel and TikTok that later went viral.
There’s something wonderful about a reception that spills out into a still active festival around it. Guests in festival attire passed by throughout the evening, adding a sense of timeless celebration that you simply can’t recreate at a traditional venue. It felt less like a wedding reception and more like the whole festival had quietly folded their love story into its own.
Going Viral: When a Fairytale Wedding Meets the Internet
A few clips from Alegra and Steven’s wedding day found their way onto Instagram and TikTok, and within days, both had gone viral (a rare occurrence for me).
I think I know why. There’s something about a real couple, a real fairytale gown, a real Renaissance setting, and an entire crowd of festival guests cheering them on toward their reception that cuts through the noise online. It isn’t staged or filtered into existence. It’s a genuine love story, photographed the way it actually felt to stand there and witness it. Watching strangers fall in love with Alegra and Steven’s day the same way I did has been one of the most rewarding parts of this whole experience.
Tips for Planning Your Own Texas Renaissance Festival Wedding
If Alegra and Steven’s wedding has you dreaming of your own fairytale ceremony at TRF, here are a few things worth knowing before you plan your own.
- Book early. TRF wedding dates fill up quickly during festival season, especially weekends, so reach out to their wedding team as soon as you have a date in mind.
- Choose your ceremony venue based on your aesthetic. The Basilica offers grandeur and architectural drama, while the Cathedral Chapel, Rose Garden, and English Garden each bring a softer, more naturally romantic feel. Think about which setting matches the story you want your photos to tell.
- Decide on a reception venue early. Reception spaces like the Italian Village and the Lady Rose Pavilion are separate from the ceremony venues and affect your overall timeline, so it’s worth deciding on this early in your planning.
- Lean into your styling. A fantasy or Renaissance inspired gown, like Alegra’s Firefly Path dress, does so much of the storytelling work for you. Don’t be afraid to choose something that feels like a character from your favorite story rather than a traditional bridal look.
- Hire a Texas Renaissance Festival photographer who understands fantasy storytelling. A TRF wedding deserves more than traditional wedding coverage. As a fantasy photographer, I specialize in fairytale themes and aesthetics which allows me to personally connect with my fantasy wedding clients.
- Plan for your guests’ experience too. Since TRF is an active festival on your wedding day, think through parking, walking distance between venues, and whether your guests will want festival admission to explore afterward.
Why Choose Royal Lune Photo as your Renaissance Festival Wedding Photographer
My approach to photography has always been rooted in fine art and storytelling, drawing heavily from Pre Raphaelite and Renaissance painting, which made photographing a true Renaissance festival wedding feel like the most natural extension of my work yet. Whether the setting is a studio in Dallas or a fifty five acre festival grounds in Todd Mission, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel like living paintings, not just photographs.
Based in the Dallas Fort Worth area, I’m available to travel for destination weddings at the Texas Renaissance Festival, other Renaissance faires, and any fantasy themed celebration that calls for a photographer who understands the difference between documenting a day and telling a story.
A Full Circle Moment
From their engagement session to Alegra’s bridal portraits to this, their actual wedding day at the Texas Renaissance Festival, Alegra and Steven’s story has been one of my favorite to photograph in full. Watching it unfold across three sessions, and now seeing strangers online fall in love with their day the same way I did, has been a genuine gift.
If you’re dreaming of your own fairytale or Renaissance festival wedding, I’d love to help bring it to life as your fantasy wedding photographer. Send me a message and tell me your story.
